This icon is located next to the address bar in the upper-right corner of your browser window. Once the Chrome browser is open, click the three-dot icon. You can find it in your Applications folder on a Mac, or on your Start menu on Windows. The Chrome icon looks like a colored ball with a blue dot at the center. Launch the Google Chrome browser from your desktop. The first method involves using the settings that are already built into the Chrome browser. Both ways work great, it is simply a matter of personal choice as to which method you choose. There are tools in Chrome settings that will help you get this done. You can use a couple of different methods to block ads in Google Chrome. Today I am going to go over both ways with you. Luckily, there are a couple of ways that you can block ads in Google Chrome. Popup ads can be one of the more annoying things you have to deal with when browsing around online. Of all the ads that are displayed in Chrome, popup ads are by far the most annoying, and dealing with them will give you a much cleaner experience within the browser. That being said, you can definitely block ads in Google Chrome and give yourself a smoother, less annoying experience in the browser. This is how companies advertise to people these days, and like it or not, they are part of the browser experience. Why Block Ads in Chrome?ĭealing with advertisements in browsers is just part of life. Let’s take a look at two ways to block ads in Google Chrome. Google also has a browser setting that will help block certain ads. If you happen to be using the Chrome browser, then you can really fight back and block ads in Chrome and block popups in Chrome by getting an ad-blocking Chrome extension. The Google Chrome browser allows you to block ads a couple of different ways. There are some things you can do to block them, depending on the browser you are using. We have no doubt that Google will find a way to resolve this ad removal issue at least for YouTube within the next few days, especially as the trick’s popularity increases.Ads online are becoming more and more intrusive and annoying. It’s a commonly forgotten edge case, websites forget to normalize the hostname, the content is still served, but there’s no hostname match on the browser so no cookies and broken CORS - and lots of bigger sites use a different domain to serve ads/media with a whitelist that doesn’t contain the extra dot Unicorn4sale goes into a little bit more detail into the technical aspects of what’s going on. Interestingly, some other sites, including our own, will break altogether if you attempt to add the extra dot. While the ad-removing trick works on the main YouTube site, adding the extra dot to YouTube Music’s URL breaks the web app entirely, rather than simply stopping ads from loading. Https ://Altered URL (note the bolded dot), little to no ads For websites including that of the New York Times, adding the extra dot will bypass the usual paywall/login block. In our own testing, the effect isn’t quite perfect with YouTube, sometimes returning an odd static image ad instead of a video ad. If you add the extra dot to a YouTube video URL, as seen below, you’ll find that YouTube’s pre-video ads generally no longer play. As this fact is not widely known, many web developers do not account for it, leading to particularly interesting results. While we typically look at urls as using dots solely to divide the domain name - separating “youtube” and “com”, for example - it’s perfectly valid to include an additional dot at the end of the domain name. With that in mind, use the trick below responsibly.Įarlier this week, over on Reddit, web developer unicorn4sale shared an interesting and frequently forgotten bit of how the internet works. A web developer has spotted and shared an interesting trick that can remove many ads from sites like YouTube and bypass paywalls for publications.īefore we dive in, it’s important to remember that ads, especially on sites like YouTube, are what help fund your favorite creators and journalists to continue creating and writing the content you love. But today I decided to share some hammer tattoos I found around the web. Occasionally I fantasize about getting a new tattoo. Ignorance of this fact, however, led to attempts to resolve the evolutionary history and prehistoric biogeography of the cockatoos, which ultimately proved fruitless because they were based on invalid assumptions to start with. In consequence, it was thought that the ancestors of the galah, the cockatiel and Major Mitchell's Cockatoo diverged from the main white cockatoo line at some stage prior to that group's main radiation this was indeed correct except for the placement of the cockatiel. Early DNA studies allied the galah with the cockatiel or placed it close to some Cacatua species of completely different appearance. There are obvious morphological similarities between the galah and the white cockatoos that make up the genus Cacatua and indeed the galah was initially described as Cacatua roseicapilla. It was separated in the monotypic genus Eolophus, but the further relationships were not clear. The classification of the Galah was difficult. Typical birds are about 350mm long and weigh between 300 and 400 grams. Sexes are similar, differing only in eye colour: the male has a brown iris, the female red. Galahs have a pale to mid grey back, a pink face and chest, and a light pink crest. It occupies open country in almost all parts of mainland Australia. However, they do like their privacy at times and are quite happy to simply be around the family rather than be handled all hours of the day.The galah is also very affectionate. The Galah, Eolophus roseicapilla, ( IPA: ) is one of the most common and widespread cockatoos. They’re very loving and affectionate birds which form a very strong bond with their owner and like to think of themselves as ‘part of the family’. Both male and female galahs are great talkers but the male is thought to be the better talker. Galahs are highly social and very long-lived though they are sometimes kept as pets, this is not something to be undertaken lightly as they bond socially with their owners and may well outlive them, and like most cockatoos, are noisy and require a great deal of attention and care. The changes wrought by European settlement, a disaster for many species, have been highly beneficial for the galah because of the clearing of forests in fertile areas and the provision of stock watering points in arid zones They are common in some metropolitan areas, for example Perth and Melbourne, and common to abundant in open habitats which offer at least some scattered trees for shelter. They appear to have been self-introduced to Tasmania. Galahs are found in all Australian states, and are absent only from the driest areas and the far north of Cape York Peninsula. Like most other cockatoos, Galahs create strong life-long bonds with their partners. The sexes appear similar, however generally adult birds differ in eye colour the male has a very dark brown (almost black) iris, and the female has a mid-brown/red iris. Galahs have a pale grey to mid-grey back, a pink face and chest, and a light pink crest. The term galah is derived from gilaa, a word found in Yuwaalaraay and neighbouring Aboriginal languages. It appears to have benefited from the change in the landscape since European colonization and may be replacing the rare Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo in parts of its range. It is endemic in Australia (including Tasmania), where its distinctive pink and grey plumage and its bold and loud behaviour make it a familiar sight in The Bush and increasingly in urban areas. It is one of the most common and widespread cockatoos, and it can be found in open country in almost all parts of mainland Australia. The Galah, Eolophus roseicapillus, is also known as the Rose-breasted Cockatoo or Galah Cockatoo. Wang, MD, director of dermatologic surgery at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre.ĭr. It also exibits questionable behaviour in the presence of UV light and was the center of a debate between the non-profit group, EWG (whose intentions are no doubt good, but its credibility is often questioned by scientists) and a group of scientists and dermatologists lead by Steven Q. What's more, the anti-aging effectiveness is not the only questionable thing about RP. Leslie Baumann in her fantastic Cosmetic Dermatology book writes that RP is topically ineffective. The evidence that RP is still an effective anti-aging ingredient is not very strong, in fact, it's weak. Retinyl palmitate -> retinol - > retinaldehyde -> all-trans-retinoic acidĪs we wrote in our lengthy retinol description the problem is that the conversion is not terribly effective. It's definitely one of the best, or probably even the best option out there for sun protection available worldwide. This seems to be true even if the skin is damaged, for example, sunburnt.Īll in all, if you've found a Zinc Oxide sunscreen that you are happy to use every single day, that's fantastic and we suggest you stick with it. But luckily, so far research shows that sunscreen nanoparticles are not absorbed but remain on the surface of the skin or in the uppermost (dead) layer of the skin. We wrote more about nanoparticles and the concerns around them here, but the gist is that if nanoparticles were absorbed into the skin that would be a reason for legitimate health concerns. Still, it's white and disturbing enough to use Zinc Oxide nanoparticles more and more often. Pinnell, it's slightly less white than TiO2. It leaves a disturbing whitish tint on the skin, although, according to a 2000 research paper by Dr. It's also often used to treat skin irritations such as diaper rash.Īs for the disadvantages, Zinc Oxide is also not cosmetically elegant. So much so that Zinc Oxide also counts as a skin protectant and anti-irritant. It's also highly stable and non-irritating. It protects against UVB, UVA II, and UVA I almost uniformly, and is considered to be the broadest range sunscreen available today. The first main difference is that while TiO2 gives a nice broad spectrum protection, Zinc Oxide has an even nicer and even broader spectrum protection.

If the case fatality rate does not tell us the risk of death for someone infected with the disease, what does it tell us? And how does the CFR compare with the actual mortality risk? When we talk about the CFR of a disease, we need to talk about it in a specific time and place – the CFR in Wuhan on 23rd February, or in Italy on 4th March – rather than as a single unchanging value. This shows that what we said about the CFR generally – that it changes from time to time and place to place – is true for the CFR of COVID-19 specifically. By 1st February, the CFR in Wuhan was still 5.8% while it was 0.7% across the rest of China. You can also see that the CFR was different in different places. The WHO reported that that was because “the standard of care has evolved over the course of the outbreak”. You can see that in the earliest stages of the outbreak the CFR was much higher: 17.3% across China as a whole (in yellow) and greater than 20% in the center of the outbreak, in Wuhan (in blue).īut in the weeks that followed, the CFR declined, reaching as low as 0.7% for patients who first showed symptoms after February 1st. It shows the CFR for COVID-19 in several locations in China during the early stages of the outbreak, from the beginning of January to 20th February 2020. You can see that in the chart below, first published in the Report of the WHO-China Joint Mission on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), in February 2020. This was clear right from the start of the pandemic. The case fatality rate of COVID-19 is not constant. If the crude mortality rate really was 2.7%, then the case fatality rate was much higher – it would be the percentage of people who died after being diagnosed with the disease. This means the crude mortality rate was 2.7%.īut 2.7% is often misreported as the case fatality rate – which is wrong, because not everyone in the world was infected with the virus that caused the Spanish flu. 2 That would have been 2.7% of the world population at the time. One estimate for the death toll of the Spanish flu, by Johnson and Mueller (2002), is that the pandemic killed 50 million people. A common example is the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918. Unfortunately, writers sometimes confuse case fatality rates and crude death rates. For instance, if there were 10 deaths in a population of 1,000, the crude mortality rate would be, or 1%. It’s calculated by dividing the number of deaths from the disease by the total population. The crude mortality rate – sometimes also called the crude death rate – measures the share among the entire population that have died from a particular disease. The “crude mortality rate” is another very simple measure which, like the CFR, gives something that might sound like the answer to the question “if someone is infected, how likely are they to die?”.īut, just as with CFR, it is actually very different. That means that it is not the same as – and, in fast-moving situations like COVID-19, probably not even very close to – the true risk for an infected person.Īnother important metric, which should not be confused with the CFR, is the crude mortality rate. So if 10 people have died, and 100 people have been diagnosed with the disease, the CFR is, or 10%.īut it’s important to note that it is the ratio between the number of confirmed deaths from the disease and the number of confirmed cases, not total cases. You take the number of people who have died from the disease, and you divide it by the total number of people diagnosed with the disease. It is relevant and important, but far from the whole story. The CFR is not the same as the risk of death for an infected person – even though, unfortunately, journalists sometimes suggest that it is. This measure is sometimes also called case fatality risk or case fatality ratio. In the media, it is often the “case fatality rate” that is talked about when the risk of death from COVID-19 is discussed. How do wrist bands help with motion sickness?Īcustimulation Bracelets What they are: Battery-powered wristbands that use electrical pulses to stimulate the median nerve, disrupting nausea signals (you apply a conductivity gel on your wrist’s P6 point before slipping one on). The short answer is yes, they are clinically proved to be very effective at reducing nausea. Sea-Bands with acupressure buttons are a noninvasive, inexpensive, safe, and effective treatment for the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.Īnd if you got the fat end of the stick and have to go through this nightmare every time you travel, you probably want to know whether or not sea bands actually work. We cruise between 2 & 3 times a year.Ī group of investigators tried Sea-Bands in distressed teens and concluded that “Acupressure is a noninvasive, safe, and effective method for the management of insomnia in adolescents, with good compliance and no adverse effects.” (Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment, Jan. I have had them before I started cruising and they have lasted for many many years and my last pair lasted 12 years. They normally last between 10 – 12 years. You can put them on even after you are sick and they will work. They may also be worn up to 5 minutes before traveling or surgery. Clinical studies support their effectiveness up to 48 continuous hours. Psi Bands may be worn on an as needed basis at the first sign of nausea. How long can you wear anti sickness bands? The Nei-Kuan Point is located underneath your first (index) finger in-between the two wrist tendons (for children, use their own fingers). Place your middle three fingers on the inside of your wrist with the edge of the third finger just below the first wrist crease. The acupressure wristbands mentioned earlier do not appear to work when nausea is provoked via spinning someone on a “seasick chair.” This was even tested on Mythbusters: the bands did nothing. NO DEALīoth Mark Cuban and Daymond John both said they Do Not TRUST HER.Can you wear anti sickness bands all the time? It appears that she came in the Shark Tank and had no intentions of negotiating as she steadfastly sticks to the 10%. Taormina instantly says no and refuses to make a counteroffer. They all go out except for Kevin O’Leary who is the only one to make an offer for the $250k but wants 40% of the company. Yes, she actually had the balls to ask the sharks to cover her past salary with their investment in the company. She also has $600k in debt that includes past deferred salaries from years ago which instantly turns all the Sharks off. They are already in over 6000 retail stores across the country with a gross profit margin of only 11% (a hundred grand). Robert Herjevic is the first to ask about sales for the last year when Taormina responds “almost a million dollars. Romy came into the Shark Tank looking for a $250k investment for a 10% stake in the acupressure business valuing it at $2.5 million. There’s more to this story then meets the eye, and unfortunately, we all have to wait until this Friday Night on ABC to see how this all plays out. Deal or No Deal, they’re still obligated to give the producers of the Shark Tank a percentage of the acupressure business. In fact, the more I dig, the more I wonder what could the Sharks even offer this business? Maybe provide additional working capital to keep up with demand? Could be, but it seems this company’s already way past that point, so there must be another reason to even consider coming to the Shark Tank and give-up part equity. Maybe a QVC play to help further the Brands awareness? No, they’ve already been on QVC as early as 2008. With an already clearly established product available in some of the most recognizable stores in the country, this should be a very interesting round of negotiations for the Sharks. A partial list of just some of the stores already carrying Psi Bands includes Toys-R-Us, Babies-R-Us, Rite Aid, Wholefoods, CVS, Walgreens, and Target stores. Psi Bands are arguably the most attractive acupressure bands on the market and many retailers have already taken notice and already sell this brand. When Taormina had severe morning sickness during her pregnancy, she designed a more fashionable attractive alternative. If you find gray or white splotches anywhere, it's probably mildew. Do a careful inspection of your basement, from the darkest corner to the surface of every cardboard box or bookshelf. Mustiness is caused by mildew and mold, which - for better or for worse - your eyeballs can easily detect. Lots of people also swear by store-bought neutralizers, like Nature's Miracle.įortunately, nose blindness only affects one of your senses, and you don't need your nose to verify a basement with a musty smell. Use more of that baking soda followed by a half-water, half-vinegar solution to neutralize the odor. The first step to cleaning up pet smells is - sorry, pets - cleaning the pets themselves. It could be pee, but more likely it's just hair, gunky ears, and weeks-old slobber. There's one easy way to tell if your home smells like pets: Do you have them? Then, yeah, unless you're an obsessive cleaner and groomer, your abode has at least some Fido funk. Here are some of the most common nose blindness culprits and how to ban them from your home. Or, on a cognitive level, you can become habituated to the smells and basically learn to ignore them. On a sensory level, your processing mechanism becomes less sensitive to the continuous stimuli. Richard Doty, the director of the Smell and Taste Center at the University of Pennsylvania. "You adapt to the smells around you," says Dr. Smell that? From last night's fish to your son's nasty lacrosse pads (why did he leave them on the table?), you probably can't detect any of your home's rankest odors. Don't know if there is a trap on the shower as it's a sealed unit, but I'm guessing yes (and can't smell anything).Stand in your kitchen and take a deep breath. The bathroom sink waste pipe has a bottle-trap on it. Cant detect a smell from the plugholes in the bathroom either. I also looked behind all of the cabinets for a problem, but could not see anything.ģ) Gas from drains? The sink doesn't smell in the kitchen, and it's got a P-bend trap on the pipe - so I can't see a problem there. So I moved the bin to a small storage room at the back of the kitchen (and kept the door closed) and thoroughly cleaned inside the cupboard under the sink. I thought maybe it was the bin under the kitchen sink that might be causing it. Not really sure where else something could have gotten, as everything seems to be tight against the concrete.Ģ) Smell from kitchen moving into rest of house? I never really detected a bad smell in the kitchen, but thought I'd rule it out anyway. I've taken up some of the wood on the stairs (not all yet) but not looking promising, as there really isn't much space between the wood boards and the concrete. The Smell: The best description of the smell I can give is something like old rubbish.ġ) Something died somewhere? This was my initial thought, and since I usually notice the smell on the stairs I thought I'd try there first. Occasionally I have felt it upstairs, but assume this is it drifting. However sometimes it doesn't smell on the stairs at all, but rather in the ground floor hallway. Location of the smell: I usually smell it when coming down the stairs, seems to be strongest about half way down. The floor in the hall and kitchen is tiles over concrete, the rest woodblock/parquet over concrete. There is a wide hallway on the groundfloor connecting the rooms (including kitchen, toilet/shower room, stairwell). Here's some info:īackground: The house is a two floor (plus basement) block/concrete construction. I'm hoping someone on here could offer some tips on how to track it down, or what it might be. It's driving me crazy (actually, my wife thinks I am crazy as she can't smell it). We have recently moved home, and all is fine appart from a mystery smell which I'm unable to track down. |
